Dear Parents,
As we draw to the close of another academic school year, I would like to thank the parents, students and staff for making it an eventful and successful one. Of course it has not been easy with Governor Schwarzenegger’s proposed State Budget cuts. But fortunately, we can thank Mayor Newsom and the City and County of San Francisco for releasing between $18 and $19 million from the city’s “Rainy Day Fund”.
We are not out of the woods yet though. Even with the City’s generous funding, the SFUSD still faces a $13 million deficit. The state will be issuing a revised budget sometime in May and the Rainy Day Fund amount may be revised, depending upon the new state’s budget.
I would like to acknowledge the students and the staff for their assistance and cooperation in maintaining a sense of sanity during the disruptions from the Proposition A construction/renovations. If you visited Lincoln this semester, you would have noticed the 21 temporary bungalows, closed sections of the main building, a large pit next to the breezeway and barricaded areas in the stadium, JROTC parking lot and the north wing. When we return from our summer break, a handicap accessible stadium and courtyard area, as well as the framing of the new wing will be completed.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the following teachers: Dr. Beverly Austin, Math Department Chair, Teacher and SSC Chair, Mrs. Shannon Manini, Special Education Teacher, Mrs. Bonnie Weisel, Spanish Teacher, and Mr. Greg Wood, Physical Education Teacher and Football Coach, who have announced their retirement. We would like to thank them for their many years of service and dedication to our students and the Lincoln community.
Here is wishing you an enjoyable and restful summer. I look forward to seeing and working with all of you in August when we welcome the class of 2012.
Summer Reading News:
This is a reminder for students and information for their parents and/or guardians that Lincoln has required summer reading for all English classes.
Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors are given a choice of two novels to read before the opening of school in August. Students entering 10th grade Ethnic Literature may choose “Monster” by Walter Dean Myers or “Chinese Cinderella” by Adeline Yan Man. Students entering 11th grade American Literature may choose “Slaughterhouse Five” by Kurt Vonnegut or “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time” by Mark Hadden. Students entering 12th grade British and European Literature may choose “Bone” by Fae M. Ng or “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel. Students will have an assignment concerning the summer reading which will be part of their first 6 week grade!
Tenth grade honors students will read “My Antonia” by Willa Cather and 11th grade honors students will read “The Unvanquished” by William Faulkner. AP students will receive their assignment from Mr. Cameli later in May. All honors and AP students must meet with their perspective teachers to get summer assignment details.
Please visit the College / Career web site for more information about scholarships and updated information.
English honors and AP student lists are available in the showcase across from room 221. Each student accepted must confirm with the appropriate teacher that he/she will take the course unless there is a scheduling conflict. Each class has a waiting list that will be activated when conflicts occur. Students on the waiting list should do the summer reading to prepare themselves in this event.
All sophomores, juniors, and seniors returning in August will have a reading assignment due at that time. This is the second year that mandatory summer reading has been assigned for all students.
Ms. Gratch and Ms. Ziegler from Social Studies have combined a lesson plan and field trip for their 11th graders to visit City Lights bookstore and other venues in North Beach where the Beat Poets resided in the 50's and 60's.
Ms. Buchanan will take her American Literature students to see the "Curse of the Starving Class" at ACT in May.
Ms. Gratch and Ms. Fall and their Creative Writing Club students have closed submissions for their Creative Writing Journal. The journal will be available in May for a small fee.
Students with high academic achievement and high STAR scores in English and/or math can be categorized as gifted. If you have any questions, call Beverly Buchanan at 759-2700 ext. 3221.
Students who applied for honors 10th, 11th English or AP Literature and Composition are currently being tested for the program. All students were invited to apply. We are looking for students with high grades in English, a score of 5 on the STAR English Language Arts test, and good readers. Lists for those invited to the program will be available the first week of April.
Attention Sophomores — If you are interested in getting a head start on your future in business or information technology, pick up an application for the Academy of Finance or The Academy of Information Technology. Don't delay - space is limited.
Teacher Academy: Join Lincoln's Teacher Academy. This academy gives students experience working with San Francisco Youth. You don't have to want to be a teacher to join; just have the interest in learning new skills and gaining experience with kids. The academy is a two year commitment and includes the potential for an internship between the junior and senior year. Applications are due March 12th. To learn more, see the school web site, Ms. Wright in B8, or your students’ counselor.
There will be two math contests given in February. The American Mathematics Competition (given nationwide) will be given on February 12th. The Bay Area Math Olympiad will be given on February 26. Announcements will be made in the bulletin and math teachers will announce the upcoming contests in classes.
In late February and early March placement tests will be given for the following mathematics classes: Geometry Honors, Advanced Algebra Honors, Pre-calculus Honors, and Advanced Placement Calculus. Please note that the Geometry Honors and Advanced Honors classes do not count for the extra grade point for UC and CSU since those universities accept only one math class, other than Advanced Placement classes, for extra grade points. The Pre-calculus Honors and the Advanced Placement Calculus courses as well as Advanced Placement Statistics do count for extra grade points with the UC and CSU systems. Announcements will made in the bulletin and in appropriate math classes about times to take these placement tests.

There will be a one day conference given by Stanford University Education Program for Gifted Youth on Thursday, November 15, 2007. The subject is educational opportunities for high-achieving and GATE students in elementary, middle and high schools. For more information and directions, go to www.giftedadvocate.com. Lincoln welcomes the 152 freshmen identified as GATE. We also recognize many other students who clearly are high-achievers.
The department members feel that the summer reading program for all 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students was a success. Considering this is the first year of the summer reading program for all students, we believe the 70% of our students who came to class having read one of the books suggested is reasonable. We expect 100% next year. Teachers provided a variety of assessments for this assignment. The also offered a number of different opportunities for those students who had not done the reading. They could either make up the work in the first grading period or do an alternative assignment with a lesser grade value. The department has two young new members this year. Richard Sylvester was a highly successful student teacher with Mr. Roberts and Ms. Gratch last year. He is teaching four 9th grade English classes and is the yearbook sponsor. Elizabeth Raupers comes from New York where she has a few years teaching experience with inner-city teens. She is teaching four 10th grade English classes and one remedial reading class. We welcome them to our Mustang family!
Last month many of our Lincoln students participated in the “Breath of Life” walk. We had a total of 93 walkers, and raised over $1800. Students from the Teacher Academy, Class of 2009, and the AP Club along with many parents walked for a good cause. We won the high school awards for most students and most money raised. Thank you to all who participated!
There is math tutoring available in room 207 during lunch on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Students from the California Scholarship Federation and one or two teachers are available each day to help students in math.
The original calendar from SFUSD had the WRONG date for semester break in January. The actual dates off is MONDAY, JANUARY 28, 2008, (not Friday, Jan 25). Please make a note of this.
